“The world will not respect Africa until Nigeria earns that respect. The black people of the world need Nigeria to be great as a source of pride and confidence” – Nelson Mandela

Hurray! Nigeria is 57. Though, there is little to be merry about, we must be cheerful because we have succeeded in remaining one ‘strong’ indivisible nation. In 1960, Nigeria was a nation of 45 million people but today, we are estimated to be over 180 million. This is growth, no?

Fifty-seven years ago, Nigeria was described as a nation flowing with milk and honey but today, the only meal majority of Nigerians eat is hardship. Nigeria is fighting on all fronts and our problems are many: bad leadership, corruption, marginalization, insecurity, decaying infrastructure, tribalism, religious fanatism, electoral fraud, illiteracy and ignorance, poverty, etc.

However, we cannot continue to do the same things and expect different results. For us to experience the much needed positive changes, we must – at every level of government: local, state and federal – decide to choose ONLY patriotic and purpose-driven leaders – and this can be possible when elections are free and fair. It is not too late to redeem the country and the time to start is NOW.

Happy Independence Nigerians. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
